Multivariate Display

For my multivariate display I chose to examine the top 10 twitter applications that allow you to access and fully utilize it on the go. Out of the total prospective users it's evident that most people would rather access it on a regular computer possibly out of convenience. To tell a story with this i showed the patterns in descending order.

The variables in the graph are the different methods in which people can use twitter and the other is a percentage equation out of the total number of people surveyed. I included an * to note certain programs that support mobile and pc platforms for their applications

Overall this was a very confusing assignment and quite possibly the most advanced. It took a long time to figure something that would be usable and also appropriate to use for this assignment. Once I got an adequate amount of data it was relatively "all downhill from there" as I have previously taken intro to spreadsheets here at RWU and agree it is a valuable skill to be able to create and do things with spreadsheets and create different visual representations as well

Final Project

When we brainstormed ideas we had come up with three different ideas, a chart rating projects and terminology throughout the semester, a storyboard, and a tag cloud. After mapping out iterations of the projects we agreed that the tag cloud would best represent and fulfill the project requirements. The tag cloud was the best way we could represent the information we wanted to include in the project.

In order to begin the tag cloud we had to figure out which terms, concepts, and projects we wanted to include. We chose the words based on what we understood as the most beneficial, useful, and informative during the semester. Color and size differentiate the importance and grouping of each word. For example, dark green represents maps, maroon represents definitions, blue represents overall concepts, and lime green represents graphs. Each word was designed with a specific purpose behind it. For example, we agreed that Gestalt is one of the most important terms from the semester; therefore its size is the largest in the tag cloud. Additionally, each word is written in all capitals not only to make it visually appealing to the audience, but no to discriminate against any letters.

Once we made each word, we figured out appropriate placement. We used a coat hanger as the base of our construction. Two words were attached to the top of the coat hanger. Since our placement was already resolved it seemed like it would be easy to attach each word according to the plan. We used a hole puncher and string to connect the words, but in theory the plan was easier than in practice. Not every word fits exactly perfectly within each space. Some of the paper is curled because of where each hole meets on each word. While the tag cloud is not constructed to absolute perfection, our message is conveyed in a successful manner. Covering the coat hanger is a picture of a cloud with the words “tag cloud.” Included in the cloud image is a key which describes our color coded system. We are very happy with the outcome of the project, despite the minor speed bumps to get here.

Storyboards (2)

During one of the biggest games of the season the runningback receives a massive blow to the head knocking both his helmet off and the football loose triggering a fumble, the announcer states blatantly, "That's gotta hurt!"
Children from down south watching their favorite team during the game outside on television see the hit and feel the runningback's pain and react accordingly
A man in the audience contemplates the situation as he carefully thinks to himself whether the flag on the play was for the hit and wonders if the runningback will be okay or if he sustained a serious injury.
The player gets up soon after the announcer states with enthusiasm, "He's okay!" and because of a penalty they get the ball back. In the next play they return it for the game winning touchdown!

Next Story:

One day a little girl wanders a little too far down the path into the woods and before she knows it gets lost.
After a while of trying to find her way back and find a familiar face she stumbles upon what seems to be the right way back.
She hears a noise and thinks it's her parents looking for her, alas it's just a friendly deer.
Meanwhile back at the lodge officers arrive at the scene with a professional woodsman who knows this neck of the woods well. After an hour or two the girl is found without a single scrape or bruise and she promises to her parents she will never wander off again.

Flow Chart

For my amazon.com how to buy a book flow chart I thought about the several times I had purchased something on amazon and thought back to how I went about it. Being someone I would consider computer savvy the steps weren't too hard to draw together. Starting with opening a web browser (i prefer firefox) and then entering in the URL www.amazon.com in and pressing enter to navigate to the page. Then simply input what you are searching for, click on the appropriate image. Then add to cart, enter shipping, and then payment info and lastly checkout and receive confirmation.

The google scholar one was very simlar as it also required opening of a web browser then navigating to the page. After it required searching through and eventually selecting the desired sources and compiling them onto a works cited page (at least for record) with the end being the finalization of your search query and end of using google scholar at least for the time being.

Visual Essay

How to Map

When creating my "how to make a spaghetti dinner" I thought to myself all the steps that would be necessary while concurrently contemplating how I would illustrate it having myself not been a good artist in the past. In the beginning I chose to show the ingredients necessary to make it. Then I show the water boiling and putting the spaghetti in once boiling. Stirring it every so often and then straining once adequately cooked (i prefer al dente). Normally at home my parents heat up the sauce but at school I get too hungry and end up just tossing it in the microwave if necessary. I'm pretty proud of the circular motions I suggested for stirring and mixing things together tho.
